Support Our Mission & Promote Adult Literacy

At the Adrian Rea Literacy Center, we are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment where adult learners can experience a supervised, outstanding literacy program.

Our Focus

We Teach Adults to Read

We offer a sequential curriculum with complimentary resource materials to prepare tutors to meet the needs of both first language English speakers as well as English as a second language (ESL) learners.

We offer free one-to-one tutoring to adults 18 years and older.

Adult Literacy and ESL

The majority of our learners study English as a second language (ESL). We also offer programs for first-language English speakers.

Our curriculum includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Testimonials

I have been a tutor at the ARLC for over two years. I have lived in Lenawee County my whole life and did not know that the Literacy Center existed until I saw an ad on Facebook. I decided to look into volunteering there. Once I learned about the program and experienced the training I was impressed with the program and humbled by the impact of what the Literacy Center has done for so many adult learners. When I volunteered here I wanted to help others with these important skills and it has been such a fantastic experience! Everyone is focused on helping each other. My learner and I have developed a special friendship and not only have I fulfilled my goal of helping others, this experience has been life changing for me. I am so grateful to be a volunteer at the Adrian Rea Literacy Center!

Tutor

In 2018 I decided to move to the state of Ohio looking for a job opportunity to work in a greenhouse. After working at Natural Fresh Farm as a general worker for two years, they gave me the opportunity to be a supervisor. This was something new for me. Many of the instructions and meetings are in English. Because I did not know English very well I decided to start studying how to read and speak English. And so, I began coming to the Adrian Rea Literacy Center. Now I know a little more English. I like my job, and now they just gave me a new job. I am assistant to the general manager. I am very happy with the change that has taken place in my life.
